Flat Stanley's Travel Log

Destination: Dreux, France

Located approximately 3981 miles from the Double JJ

Visited with Mélanie, who told us about her city below.

While Flat Stanley was visiting, these are some of the things he did:

"We went to the cinema to see an old French film, "Man Oncle" from Jaques Tati. We had a Halloween competition and I won a prize! We filmed a video about Halloween. We had a cross-country competition."

These are some of the amazing foods Stanley ate:

"Cordon bleu, chicken curry & carrots, rillette d'oie, crème brûlée, ice cream, & chocolate mousse."

Describe the weather/climate & what type of clothing we should dress Stanley in next time he chooses to visit.

"It's not too cold for November, but it's grey, windy, & rainy. Bring your windcheater!"

What interesting facts could Stanley learn about while visiting your city?

"Our annual fair is 800 years old. Some French kings & princes are buried in the Chapelle Royale in our city. The oldest building in our city is from the 13th century."

Does your city have any traditions or celebrations that Stanley did or could participate in?

"Yes, we have the Flambarts Festival in December where we have marches & parades in the streets, with drums & cymbals, and at night it ends with fireworks and people throw candy in the streets for kids to watch or pick up. It's great fun!"

Destination: Denver, CO

Located approximately 1194 miles from the Double JJ

Visited with Ms. Longanetti's & Ms. Paulson's 1st Grade Class, who told us about their city below.

"Hello and thank you for coming to visit our wonderful state! Your flat friend had so much fun visiting! Here are some interesting facts our class thought you should know about Colorado!

Colorado is a great place to live & visit. We live in one of Colorado's largest cities, & state capital, Denver. The population of Colorado in 2012 was 5,029,196 and the population of Denver was 600,158. Our city is very busy & is full of people & cars. Denver has large buildings, called skyscrapers. The tallest building in Denver is the 56-story Republic Plaza, which rises 714 feet & was built in 1984.

Below is a picture of the Capital Building. Stanley got to drive past the capitol when he was in town. He could not believe how big it was. He was so excited to learn that the top of the capitol is covered in GOLD!

Colorado gained statehood on August 1, 1876 and was the 38th state. Colorado was nicknamed the Centennial State, because the Declaration of Independence had been signed for 100 years at the time of statehood. Colorado is the 8th largest state in the United States.

Unlike some states, we have very distinct seasons. We experience winter, spring, summer, and fall. It is currently fall in Colorado. Our temperature this week had been in the mid 30s and low 40s. We have had a few snow storms that have made everything white! It is very pretty here in the winter.

Our state animal, which lives in the Rocky Mountains, is the Big Horn Sheep. We also are home to bears, deer, raccoons, skinks, fox, owls, hawks, & mountain lions.

The official state flag of Colorado was adopted on June 5, 1911. It was designed by Andrew Carlisle Johnson in 1911. The white in the flag symbolizes Colorado's snowcapped mountains, the blue symbolizes clear blue skies, the red symbolizes the reddish soil, and the golden yellow represents the sun. Attached to the flag is a cord of gold & silver, intertwined with gold & silver tassels.

We have had so much fun hosting your flat visitor, Sheriff Stanley! We are a class of 52 first graders at Skyline Vista Elementary School, in Denver, CO. Our class speaks a variety of languages at home (Spanish, Vietnamese, Hmong, & English), but in class we use English. We have two different types of class pets: a water frog named Kermit and five fish.

Colorado has four distinct seasons: winter, spring, summer, and fall, with 300 days of sunshine! It is almost winter here. Most of the trees have lost their leaves & are covered in snow. Your flat friend had a great time snowboarding with our teacher and making a snowman! He was cold while he visited the mountains but he had a lot of fun.

We have been learning so much this year. In science we are learning about air and weather. In reading & writing we are working on becoming fluent readers & writing 5-6 complete sentences. During math we are learning about measurement, place-value, money, and time.

In Colorado every year the city decorated the City & County building for the holiday season, Then, we have a large parade of lights that passes in front o the City & County Building. Stanley went to the parade with a friend from our class. Make sure to look at the pictures we sent from the parade!

This was one of the greatest adventures we have ever had with a visiting Stanley! We have included some great pictures of things we did. Thank you for visiting!"
